A cell site was either a macro tower or a small cell. Tall or short. Big or discreet. Two categories, relatively well understood. Today, that answer doesn’t hold up. What a cell site looks like now depends on a much more dynamic set of variables, including RF requirements, real estate constraints, local regulations and cost. Light Reading – Since 2017, the cost of nearly everything American households depend on has risen. Groceries are up 32%. Electricity costs 45% more. Car insurance has nearly doubled. Gasoline swings wildly but trends up. Veterinary bills, vehicle repairs, tires, natural gas: all higher, most by double digits. Data Center Dynamics – AT&T has struck an agreement worth $2 billion to improve the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). As part of the agreement that was announced this week, AT&T agreed to invest approximately $1 billion in new network and coverage enhancements. The carrier also agreed that it will help to reduce costs borne by FirstNet by roughly $1bn, with this being used to further invest in the network buildout. Read More

Inside Towers – Patrick Halley, President and CEO of the Wireless Infrastructure Association, told attendees that the wireless sector is being reshaped by carrier consolidation, fixed wireless growth, satellite competition, artificial intelligence, and shifting policy priorities. He said the move from five nationwide or regional carriers down to three has had a clear impact on the industry, but emphasized that the remaining national carriers are still highly competitive. Anterix – Anterix and Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP) announced a 900 MHz spectrum sale agreement that enables TNMP to deploy a mission-critical private wireless network designed to strengthen grid reliability and support essential service improvements across its territory. Nationwide, nine utilities now leverage Anterix’s 900 MHz platform across 15 states, allowing for faster outage response and real-time monitoring for critical infrastructure. Read More

Fierce Network – Networks are and always have been telcos’ biggest asset and their area of expertise. Owning that in the AI era isn’t a bad thing. AT&T – AT&T is supporting NASA communications for the historic Artemis II Moon mission. AT&T is providing connectivity and on-site support for near-Earth and deep-space communications that help keep mission control and four astronauts connected as NASA’s Orion spacecraft travels nearly 250,000 miles into space and around the Moon.
