Mar 19, 2020 COVID-19 Resource Center What is COVID-19? According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. … The virus is thought to spread mainly between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It also may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. … Patients with COVID-19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of: • fever • cough • shortness of breath Some patients have pneumonia in both lungs, multi-organ failure and in some cases death.” Read more about COVID-19 at the Centers for Disease Control website. Industry Response New March 26: As part of its 2020 Telecom Infrastructure Provider Outlook, Sitetracker found that 44% of carriers believe the Coronavirus disease will increase demand for telecom infrastructure as more work-from-home polices are put in place. “At the very least, recent changes in our work lives highlight the importance of communications infrastructure,” the report said. As connectivity providers inside dense office buildings and public gathering spaces, Distributed Antenna System providers anticipate less demand for connectivity. Recent changes to work-from-home policies have not generally impacted infrastructure providers’ ability to deploy or maintain networks, survey respondents said. However, providers are concerned that government permitting offices could be an obstacle in getting infrastructure deployed. Many jurisdictions rely on paper filings or in-person permitting process, which could be impacted by furloughed workers or fewer office hours.
