Edge Infrastructure: Defining the Opportunity and the Path Forward

Today, at WIA’s Digital Infrastructure Forum, the association released Edge Infrastructure: Defining the Opportunity and Path Ahead. The paper sets out an industry-built definition of edge infrastructure, shaped by the people who build and operate it, as AI moves from training to real-time and location-sensitive inference.

The paper is the first public product of WIA’s Edge Infrastructure Initiative (EI2). EI2 is a working group of tower and communications site owners, network operators, and technology and equipment providers.  It’s central finding: inference needs compute resources close to users and devices, and WIA members already own and manage the sites, power, fiber and permits to deliver it.
