From 5G Advanced to Direct-to-Device Satellite to AI-Ready Networks: New Training for Telecom Leaders

The telecom infrastructure world is moving into a new operating reality: 5G is evolving into 5G Advanced, satellite is becoming a practical extension of coverage through direct-to-device connectivity, and AI is pushing networks toward new performance, security, and modernization requirements. Those aren’t “future trends”—they’re active priorities across standards bodies, vendors, and operators right now.  

At Connect (X) 2026 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the wireless infrastructure community engageed with the newest solutions and connected with partners. That’s exactly the environment where leaders ask: What do I need to understand next to make good decisions for my network and workforce?  

To meet this moment, WIA’s Telecommunications Education Center (TEC) is introducing three newly released courses designed for telecom and wireless infrastructure professionals—built to translate fast-moving change into practical understanding and action. 

Trend #1: 5G is evolving—the road to 5G Advanced 

“5G Advanced” isn’t just a marketing label; it’s closely tied to the evolution of standards for wireless technology which are being implemented within equipment now. This is the start of the 5G-Advanced era and a bridge toward what comes next. That matters because these technology upgrades focus on areas that directly affect how networks are built and optimized—like AI/Machine Language integration, energy efficiency, and support for immersive applications.  

WIA TEC’s new course 5G Advanced: Technical Innovations and Industry Impact is designed to help leaders understand what “5.5G / 5G Advanced” changes in real terms—higher capability, improved energy efficiency, deeper AI integration, and support for use cases such as XR and industrial automation. It’s built around the kinds of questions that show up in planning meetings: What’s different? What’s hype? What’s deployable? And what do my teams need to be ready for?  

Trend #2: Satellite is moving from “adjacent” to integrated—especially for D2D 

Direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity is rapidly becoming part of mainstream telecom planning because it reframes satellite from a separate ecosystem into an extension of mobile connectivity—especially for remote, maritime, mountainous, and disaster-impacted regions. D2D satellite connectivity enables everyday devices to connect without specialized hardware and is an increasingly viable solution where terrestrial coverage is unavailable. Early commercialization has moved D2D from “interesting” to “strategic” for many organizations. 

WIA TEC’s new course Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity: Foundations, Technology, and Telecom Applications is built to help telecom leaders get fluent in how satellite integrates with wireless systems: the basics (orbits, frequency bands, link design), practical constraints (latency, coverage, spectrum management), and emerging trends such as LEO constellations and 5G/6G integration—backed by real-world applications and case studies.  

Trend #3: AI is becoming an infrastructure conversation, not just an app conversation 

Across the industry, the shift to AI isn’t limited to software—it’s changing what networks must deliver. McKinsey’s analysis describes how telcos are positioned to play a larger role in AI infrastructure, pointing to the rising need for high-performance compute and connectivity and emphasizing that meeting AI demand will require assets like data centers and fiber connectivity 

Meanwhile, NVIDIA’s telecom-focused efforts underscore the push toward architectures that better support distributed AI inference and new workloads—highlighting how evolving AI applications increase pressure to align compute closer to endpoints and to meet requirements like security and quality of service. These are the kinds of forces that make “AI readiness” a network roadmap issue for wireless infrastructure.
